Once again, the Pew Internet & American Life Project delivers great statistics when it comes to the ways Americans are embracing the Internet. The report, appropriately entitled “The Audience for Online Video-Sharing Sites Shoots Up,” documents the tremendous growth of online video. Among the highlights:
• The share of online adults who watch videos on video-sharing sites has nearly doubled since 2006
• More than a third of Internet users now say they’ve watched a TV show or movie online
• Watching videos on sites like YouTube is more prevalent than use of social networking sites

The report, of course, credits advancing broadband adoption for this rapid growth.
“Broadband connectivity has helped to set the stage for high-quality viewing experiences and broaden the appeal of online video content. Fully 63% of American adults now have high-speed connections running to their homes.1 Among broadband users, 69% watch video on sharing sites, and 23% do so on a typical day.”
Such findings demonstrate why it’s critical that our nation has robust broadband networks that continually expand and innovate as demand soars for video and other high-capacity online offerings.
