Yesterday, Chris Anderson, Editor of Wired Magazine, assured an audience DC entrepreneurs that we are in the golden age for small businesses during his keynote at the Grow Smart Business conference. Thanks to the Internet, people are able to operate quickly and scale for growth in the global economy, he added. Anderson articulated what many with websites, blogs and more have already realized -– the Internet has created infinite shelf space and anyone can fill it.
What Anderson didn’t mention is that broadband is key to putting businesses in that infinite shelf space. The majority of attendees and panelists rely heavily on broadband-based tools. The crowd ranged from communications consultants, to Facebook application developers, to food truck operators. All agreed on the Internet’s importance since even companies with real-life products need online marketing, email, and other web-based tools to succeed.
Check out two examples below. One is Maddie Grant of Social Fish, a boutique consulting firm in DC that specializes in social media. Grant is using broadband to help associations connect with their state and local chapters, among other things. The other is Adam Rasmussen of UX Interactive, an independent web design consultant who focuses on nonprofits and small businesses. Rasmussen shared “I wouldn’t even have opened my business if I didn’t have the opportunities of broadband.”
