NextGenWeb applauds the FCC for “walking the walk” when it comes to using broadband-based technology tools to improve communications and participation in government.  The FCC continues to add new and diverse social media functionalities to its online activities, thereby demonstrating the transformative power of broadband.  What began with the BlogBand blog, the livestreaming of workshops, a Twitter account and hashtags, has now expanded to video blog postings, which are available (and shareable) via YouTube, and—most recently—a page on Facebook.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski did the inaugural video blog posting below, recognizing the importance of broadband to our nation’s economic growth, public safety, and participation in government.  Genachowski also shares his views on the evolving role of the FCC.  He hopes to change the agency in key ways:

1)   Using technology tools to communicate effectively

2)   Using technology to get feedback/participation

3)   Emphasizing thoughtful review of data

Genachowski assures that his bottom line for the FCC is to “unleash the power of innovators and entrepreneurs in the United States.”  To that end, he reminds viewers of the Notice of Inquiry on wireless and urges feedback on how the FCC can best promote innovation and investment.

The FCC will continue to expand its use of social media for sharing and gathering information as it plans for the launch of Ideascale, an online forum for the FCC to post ideas and have people vote and comment on them.   Here’s hoping the FCC keeps the innovation and engagement coming—and remembers that broadband makes it all possible.
