Every turn of a page in the calendar seems to mark a special event or day to remember. Some are well-known, with easy-to-understand significance, like Thanksgiving or the 4th of July.
However, other noteworthy times can be overlooked. Squeezed between back to school and Halloween and straddling the months of September and October, Hispanic Heritage Month is one example.
But those who take the time to learn about the important contributions Hispanics have made to American culture will find a wealth of stories worth sharing. порно каналы мастурбация члена
There are adventures like the story of Juan Bautista de Anza, whose expeditions led to the colonization of San Francisco in 1776; or more recently, the story of Jaime Escalante, a Bolivian-born immigrant who, against the odds, taught children in an East Los Angeles neighborhood to excel at calculus. He later served as the inspiration for the movie Stand and Deliver.
And with the power of broadband, these stories can be easily found online and brought to life through pictures, video or song.
The Verizon Foundation’s Thinkfinity.org is one example of the tremendous educational resources that can be found online – for free – to benefit parents, teachers and students.
For Hispanic Heritage Month, Verizon Thinkfinity.org has created an easy-to-find special section on its website, highlighting free resources ranging from audio stories to videos to maps of Latin American countries.
Verizon Thinkfinity’s Hispanic Heritage Month feature is one of the many ways Verizon supports education and the Hispanic community.
Since 2006, Verizon has contributed more than $40 million to support nonprofits that serve the Hispanic community. This year alone, the Verizon Foundation awarded more than $495,000 in scholarships to Hispanic students for the 2009-2010 school year.
Among the organizations that have received grants from Verizon to fund scholarships are Hispanic College Fund, Hispanic Heritage Fund, Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Program at the University of Texas-Pan American, Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers National Scholarship and the University of Puerto Rico.
This Hispanic Heritage Month, I encourage you to take a few minutes to learn a little more about the people behind the month. Their stories will leave you inspired.
