The U.S. vehicle population recently topped 237 million vehicles, and road congestion in major urban areas is now worse than ever. Of course, as a Washington, DC commuter, I know this first hand, as DC is now tied for second on the ‘Worst Congestion’ list.
So that makes a new report from TIAX LLC of Cambridge, Mass., sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association, even more compelling. The report says that “using electronics to telecommute saves the equivalent of 9 to 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year €” the same amount of energy used by roughly 1 million U.S. households every year.” Which means every telecommuter is helping the environment right now.
The CEA report also showed that “an estimated 3.9 million telecommuters in the United States reduced gasoline consumption by about 840 million gallons, while curbing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly 14 million tons. This level of CO2 reduction is equal to removing 2 million vehicles from the road every year.”

NextGenWeb was on Capitol Hill recently covering an Alliance for Public Technology. It is part of APT’s campaign to show how broadband is changing people’s lives — for the better. It was a well-attended panel of seasoned telemedicine experts, including Dr. Jay Sanders, President & CEO of the Global Telemedicine Group at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Sanders got his start in e-Health in 1967 and is a sought after spokesperson on the issue.
While attending USTelecom’s Executive Business Forum in San Jose, NextGenWeb had the opportunity to chat with Walter Delph, Director of Content and Programming at Verizon about the relationship between broadband deployment and FIOS. Walter shared his version of “FIOS 101” and touched on the importance of continued broadband deployment for services like FIOS to be delivered to consumers.
